What is the difference between road and fixed wheels ?

Fixed Gear: fixed gear, or "track" wheels, are bolted onto the bicycle with supplied bolts and are often used without brakes. There is an option to paint the braking surface, except for natural-colored wheels, which will always have the braking surface. Painted braking surfaces must never be be braked on, doing so will cause damage to your wheel, your brakes, and reduce stopping power which can lead to crashes. This fixed side of the rear hub uses a fixed cog so no freewheeling (coasting) is available. The other side can be used for a single speed freewheel with the purchase of one of our freewheel spacers to allow the user to turn his wheel around and use a single speed freewheel to allow coasting. Brakes should be used when using single speed freewheels.

Road wheels: road wheels for the front are for use with a quick-release lever to attach the wheel to the bicycle (not included). Road rear wheels are for geared road bikes that use a Shimano, or Shimano compatible 8,9, or 10 speed cassette type rear hub (cassette and skewer not included). Rims should never be painted on road wheels as rim brakes are needed to stop the bicycle (unless disc brake option is selected and the bicycle is equipped with disc brakes).
