Critical Mass is an event typically held on the last Friday of every month in cities around the world where bicyclists and, less frequently, unicyclists, skateboarders, inline skaters, roller skaters and other self-propelled commuters take to the streets en masse. While the ride was originally founded with the idea of drawing attention to the unfriendliness of motorists toward bicyclists and increasing alternative transportation awareness, the leaderless structure of critical mass makes it impossible to assign it any one specific goal.
Detroit Critical Mass has been going for rides for about two years. This year, knowledge of the ride and increased cycling popularity has been beautifully combining for a seemingly exponential increase in riders. In May there were about 150 riders and in June and July there were about 275 and 450, respectively. In other large cities, like San Francisco and Chicago, the ride draws cyclists by the thousands.
If interested in coming out for a ride, everyone meets at the Wayne State University athletic fields at the corner of Warren & Trumbull on the last Friday of every month at 6:30 pm. Come hang out! Meet some people! RIDE YOUR BIKE and HAVE FUN!! |
